Even though 15 families chose to get up early for a 7:00 am departure time, it was a great day of skiing at Zel am see in Austria. With 25 skiers and snowboarders, it took a little while to get the rental equiptment sorted out. We hit the hills with 2 instructors and planned for a two hour lesson. With the sun shining, the alps were a picture perfect backdrop for a day on the slopes, a few spills and a lot of laughs. There were only a few minor bumps and bruises experienced which is amazing considering the fact that a few of us were brave enough to venture above the 2000 m mark.
The trip up the mountain started with a gondola ride up approximately a quarter of the way. The chalet at this spot was our central meeting spot and while some skied/boarded at this level, others went up one or two more chairlifts through the clouds. The best way to describe the view from the top is a 360 degree view of heaven. It almost felt like we were dropped right into a postcard. We met the non skiers for lunch in the chalet and enjoyed a traditional pork schnitzel. Believe me, we were starving, and it was awesome! We hit the trails for a few more hours and entertained the Canadian spectators with questionable form, speed and agility and a few good wipe outs!!!!
Can I say again this was the best day yet?!
The non skiers enjoyed a walk around the quaint town where unfortunately all the shops were closed but cafes served incredible pastries, desserts and coffees. It was nice to spend an hour relaxing on a sunday morning.
After a long day of adventures, we jumped back on the bus headed for Saltzberg. It took about 5 minutes for most to fall asleep once the bus got going. Of course, for those awake on the upper level, Dougie provided his usual entertainment. We met up with the rest of our group who enjoyed a walking tour of Saltzberg and a well deserved sleep-in. Following a team dinner at the hotel of pasta and mystery fish.. ughhh.. we went across the street to McDonalds.
Most of the parents are pretty tired and are quickly dissapearing to bed. The kids however are still going strong. (hence the reason i'm delivering the update tonight)
Below are some shots of the day, taken from several points on the mountain.
Have a great night....Emily and your travelling raiders
Great job, Emily. Glad you all enjoyed the skiing and schnitzel! Thankfully, McDonalds was near by after your previous meal. I hear the pastries in Austria are amazing. Just two more sleeps and you'll be home. Probably glad but also a litte sad?
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the updates and amazing photos.
Hello Raiders and fans everywhere-
ReplyDeleteCan't tell you how much we're enjoying your updates and head for our computer every day at about this time to share in your experiences. Your pics have been fantastic too.Wonderful scenery! Makes us feel as if we're 'close by'. Glad to hear that thetre were no injuries in spite of the numerous wipe-outs. Was worried about our Mitch who was very daring when we skied with him in the past and we're sure he hasn't changed since he's taken to the 'board'.
Glad to know that you're all enjoying a taste of Europe and hope everyone will return to Canada with enough memories to last a lifetime!! Also pleased to note your return to the WIN column in yesterday's game. Was beginning to think the Czechs were ganging up on you!!!!!
Have fun the rest of the way!
